There are thousands of military personnel overseas fighting for their country right now. They have risked their lives in order to protect their home and to help people struggling in other countries. November is the month where we recognize U.S. soldiers and thank them for what they have sacrificed for us.
On the Friday before Veterans Day, our school invited veterans to share their hardships, experiences and lessons learned with students. The attendees of the assembly stood for the pledge after the band played the national anthem. Veterans Chris Clewell, Chris Szarek and Valerie Randolph gave their account on their services.
Second class E5 officer Valerie Randolph joined the Navy late because she was afraid to “be a boy” by shaving her head. Upon joining, Randolph's beliefs proved to be misconceptions. She learned soldiers in the Navy are still able to wear makeup, do their nails, “get a weave” and get tattoos. “Your freedom isn’t completely, you know, robbed from you,” Randolph said.
Randolph also disputed stereotypes, saying “The military as a whole is not what you see on TV.” The drill sergeants do not "scream in your face” as they are usually shown doing in cartoons and online.
"This was one of the best school assemblies," said Ben Forder. "It was a way of showing our respect for our veterans."
The Bulldog Brief would like to thank everyone in the military as well as their families for their contributions in keeping us safe.
