The book fair was a wonderful opportunity to expand your mind while at the same time helping the school. It took place on Thursday, December 4th.
“I think [the fundraiser] is great. I love sharing our profits with good organizations like the middle school library,” says Carol Davis, Community Relations Manager at the Alderwood Barnes and Noble. Seventh Grader Graham Everhart agrees, saying “it was a good idea. It was very well planned.”
The fundraisers started when Barnes and Noble “work[ed] with different schools in the community, and they arranged months ahead of time to hold and have an event that invites their families in,” says Ms. Davis. “[Part of the profits from] the shopping the families do for five days is shared with the organization [in the form of a gift card].” The book fair isn’t limited to books. Purchases from the in-store Cafe made in the period that the Book Fair ran also helped the school.
Students were found in all corners of the store, with students like Graham purchasing books like Spam Nation by Brian Krebs, and Kallie Nguyen purchasing Bombay Blues by Tanuja Desai Hidier.
In addition to all of the potential reading, the Jazz Band also played, performing highlights from their first performance as well as Frosty the Snowman and a medley of well-known Christmas tunes, W.C. Handy’s “St. Louis Blues,” and a composition entitled “Our First Blues”. Every member of the Jazz Band performed their own written solo for the first time publicly, and Mr. Turner soloed on “St. Louis Blues.”
Congratulations to 8th grader Donald Strohl and his family for winning the raffle for the $25 Barnes and Noble gift card. Special thanks to Handrae Henthorn and Eva Villavicencio for manning the gift-wrapping table. Congratulations to Ms. Garrison on the success of her Book Fair.
