Who Could Your Pennies Help?

Pasta For Pennies is a fundraiser our school and many others across the country have been doing for years. All proceeds go to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) of Washington and Alaska. The fundraiser we did, Pasta For Pennies, is funded by Olive Garden. In each school, the class with the highest money average per student won a pasta lunch from Olive Garden. This is an ASB run fundraiser. The collecting, counting, and fundraising was done by the representative from each class.

LLS benefits the research for two different kinds of cancer: Leukemia, cancer of the blood, and Lymphoma, cancer of the lymph system. The leukemia survival rate is much higher than it used to be, all the way up to a 90% chance of remission. Hodgkins Lymphoma is highly treatable and only causes short term changes in people with the cancer.

Our school reached the goal of $2,750 by the end of the month with Ms. Hunter’s class in the lead. Ms. Zumbo’s class was behind by only a few dollars.

This fundraiser was specifically chosen instead of a national or international fundraiser. because money goes directly to local families. Ms. Hunter said, “For me, I’ve always gone back to Pasta for Pennies as a fundraiser because it supports local research and local families. For me, the fundraisers where the money goes off to some national corporation that is very valuable but doesn’t impact us as a community as much isn’t as personal to me.” It’s nice to know that as a school, we could be changing the lives of people living around us. This closeness makes it seem much more personal.

LLS was created to help find cures for blood cancers. The organization ensures patients will have the proper support and treatments needed. Each of the patients is guaranteed the support they need to overcome their specific cancer. Students participating in this fundraiser can save lives in their very own community just by donating the spare change in their couch.
