She doesn’t mind the cloudiness, she enjoys when people do the things they love, and she tries to be hyper and excited around her students. These characteristics describe P.E. teacher Mrs. Wertman. Mrs. Wertman always feels excited to work in a team with the staff and students. “
[Brier Terrace] is my school. This is where I want to be,” says Mrs. Wertman as she recalls her first impression of the school. Prior to her position here, Mrs. Wertman worked at Riverside Middle School in Chattaroy, Washington for all 26 years of her teaching career.
Mrs. Wertman also notes the diversity of cultures at BTMS and enjoys learning new words and cultural traditions from the mouths of the students. The easy-going interactions and respectful students help keep Mrs. Wertman interested in the school community.
Despite low income, Mrs. Wertman claims she has never once regretted teaching. She began teaching physical education because her “happy place was in a gym.” Overall, Mrs. Wertman wants to teach her students “a love of exercising, loving their bodies [and] nutrition.”
Many of Mrs. Wertman’s ideas for lesson plans come from watching Mrs. Russell and Ms. Schulz. Unlike the two, Mrs. Wertman "[doesn't] necessarily like being inside for P.E. all the time." Mrs. Wertman frequently brings her classes outside because she loves getting muddy while running.
Although she is new to Brier Terrace, Mrs. Wertman is actively trying to get kayaks and archery programs for the school. “[Extracurricular activities] don’t always have to be the same old P.E. things,” says Mrs. Wertman. “[Middle school] is a great time for kids to try new things like sports and clubs.”
In her leisure time, Mrs. Wertman is often found driving around the neighborhood, running in races, skiing with the “Skihawks” and doing yoga. She also finds herself loving Boeing planes, because she is fascinated by the building process and large garages the planes are built in. Another winged interest of Mrs. Wertman's is crows. A large flock of crows fly overhead as Mrs. Wertman heads to work. Mrs. Wertman loves seeing flocks of crows fly in a different direction at the end of the day.
