The ASB (Associated Student Body) is an elected student body that makes several decisions regarding how things operate during the school year. For example, the ASB is in charge of setting up large school events, such as dances, spirit weeks, and fundraisers. Each BEL class has an ASB representative, and there is also an ASB president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer who are elected by the seventh graders every year.
The president of the ASB this year is Meghan Park, the vice president is Elle Norton, the secretary is Vania Liu, and the treasurer is Roni Flynn. The advisor of the ASB is Mr. Treadway. The ASB president oversees the ASB, and acts as the representative of the ASB. The vice president presides over the meetings, and is responsible for making sure meetings are held. The ASB treasurer provides a financial statement at each meeting, signs all financial papers, and keeps a record of all ASB financial information. Lastly, the secretary takes notes at all meetings and keeps a record of all ASB activities.
The ASB hold meetings every tuesday, where they plan for the future of the ASB. They are currently working on an upcoming spirit week, a pep assembly, and a dance at the end of October.
The ASB has a wide range of control over school events, but they must follow all school rules and district policies. They have the creative choice of theme and activity for school events.
“The ASB is important for the students at our school because it is their voice in what happens at Brier Terrace,” Mr. Treadway says. It is the students that plan the dances, pep assemblies, and other school activities. “ASB is that important place where students can go to have their voices heard by their peers and take action,” said Mr.Treadway.
Mrs. Wertman is an ASB advisor along with Mr. Treadway, Ms. McVay is the bookkeeper, and Mr. Turner is the designated administrator of the ASB. Mrs. Hunter was the ASB advisor before Mr. Treadway, and co-advised with Mr. Treadway for his first two years as ASB advisor. One of the first major things that Mr. Treadway did as the ASB advisor was bringing back the ASB constitution, which came with choosing the committee chairpersons. These people are chosen from the core council of elected members. “My goal is for the ASB to be completely student centered,” says Mr. Treadway.
