On Saturday, October tenth, twenty-seven members of our cross-country team attended the Hole in the Wall Invitational at Lakewood High School. The Hole in the Wall is the largest cross-country invitational in the state of Washington, with attendees ranging from middle school to professional cross-country runners. The Brier Terrace team ran with confidence against the swarm of other runners on the one point seven mile middle school course. This was the first ever cross-country invitational Brier Terrace has ever attended.
Brier Terrace faced off against sixteen other middle schools, with a total of one hundred girls and one hundred and forty-two boys competing in the middle school race. This year’s race saw over eighty-five schools represented from as far away as Hawaii and British Columbia, Canada, with over two thousand five hundred athletes registered for the event.
Brier Terrace scored fifth out of the eight middle schools that had enough girls to score, and scored seventh out of the nine middle schools that had enough boys to score. On our girls team, the top runner was Elsie Johnson, who scored twenty-third out of all middle school girls, with a time of twelve minutes and twenty-four point one seconds. On the boys team, the top runner was Connor Bryan, who scored twenty-second out of all middle school boys, with a time of eleven minutes and two point nine seconds.
Our cross-country runners and coaches gathered at our school at seven in the morning to travel to Lakewood High School, in Arlington. The ASB provided the funding for the racing fees required to compete, and transportation. “The coaches are very appreciative of our school ASB for funding our racing fees and transportation, as well as the parents who woke up extra early on a Saturday to support our team!” Mr. Treadway, one of our cross-country coaches, said.
