Selected students from the eighth grade orchestra went on the field trips to four elementary schools on December 4th and 8th. They visited Terrace Park, Hilltop, Brier, and Cedar Way Elementary schools to meet the current sixth graders that are in their own school’s orchestra. Mrs. Schillen’s purpose for this field trip was to encourage the students to continue orchestra in middle school as she said, “To encourage the 6th graders to continue playing next year.” The students’ jobs were to also to meet, answer questions about middle school, and most of all, tell the kids why orchestra is the funnest elective and why they should continue in middle school.
Some students also stood up and said a few encouraging words to the students. Mrs. Schillen said, “I think that they talked to the kids like kids instead of having me go out and talk to them like an adult.” Thomas Schmitz said, “It was a lot of fun to come to orchestra and they might think that it might not be as fun as the band kids from what they heard, but it's really fun to play the instruments.” Another orchestra member said, “It was really fun meeting the kids and we got to miss school because of field trips.”
According to Eva Villavicencio, her favorite part of the field trip was “Playing our pieces for the 6th graders.” Thomas Schmitz also said, “It was really nice because I remembered when the 8th graders came and played for us and it was really fun [both] then and now.” After the field trip, Mrs. Schillen felt that the field trip “was just to know the happy feeling of getting to know the sixth graders.”
