We may or may not be enjoying our enrollment in Brier Terrace Middle School, but do you ever wonder how someone before you thinks of our school? This is how Molly Taylor, a former student of BTMS (2012-2013), a STEM student and musician, thinks of the school.

First of all, it would be wise to get the most obvious question out of the way. What was it like when you were enrolled at BTMS?

“We had a bunch of teachers who’ve retired or moved on to different schools now – Ms. Tollefsen, Ms. Brick, and Ms. Szendre, among others. More specifically to myself, I know I felt really intimidated by the big school in my seventh grade year, but soon enough, I was surrounded by caring friends, new and old. Most people say that the middle school years are the best and the worst at the same time, but for the most part, I just have cheerful memories of BTMS.”

It seems that many things have changed between then and now, directing to this next question. What did you enjoy most about BTMS?

“That’s a hard one! I loved so much about it – the music program, the life-changing teachers, the students, the cotton trees in the spring…. But I think I’d have to choose Mr. Presho’s science class and Ms. Zumbo’s band classes as my most enjoyable experiences at BTMS. Without Mr. Presho, I never would have realized how much I love science, and Ms. Zumbo’s cheery persistence kept me pushing through hard times, in both my life and my instrument playing.”

Lastly, do you have any tips, tricks, or advice to any future or current students?

“Just the same old cliché stuff high school students always say – enjoy the little things, because they’ll stay with you forever, and stick it through the tough times, because it’s not worth anything if it’s not worth fighting for. And, of course, remember to be your own individual. The choices you make now make you into the person you’ll be for the rest of your life.”
