Mr. Treadway had decided to get a class pet after talking to other teachers and consulting with our principal, Ms. Alexander. After Ms. Alexander approved the class pet, Treadway will be bringing the turtle in on April 13. The turtle is a pig-nosed turtle (also known as carettochelys insculpta), which Treadway named Crush in honor of the turtle from Finding Nemo.

According to the School Board Policies and Procedures, class pets are generally not allowed unless the animal is approved by the District, and met the policy. Which says that the animal must be kept in clean and maintained aquariums.

“I think that having a class pet is going to bring more joy and laughter in the class,” said Treadway. “Getting a pet would be influential for my students to start being more responsible by taking care of Crush.”

According to Treadway, turtles are easier to take care of and fewer students are allergic to the amniote (animals that lay their eggs on land). Students from Treadway’s classes are also excited to meet meet the animal.

“I’m really excited to have a class pet and I can’t wait until Mr. Treadway brings it in!” said Gwen Lington.
