April is National Autism Awareness Month. Although there is no known cause for autism, most people think it is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function or with vaccinations. Ms. Shurtz, one of the in BTMS, said, “There is a wide spectrum of Autism, from not a lot of symptoms to a lot of symptoms” also, “Some people with not a lot of symptoms, can do everything or almost everything that people do without symptoms.” According to Autism Speaks, the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age. Ms. Shurtz said, “ One of my favorite things about teaching autistic kids is that they have different interests, like things they like to do, that you are able to explore.” And, “They are loving, loyal, and they really enjoy what their passion is.”
